Certification Program

To earn the CAIP designation, applicants must have the following: 

• At least five years of full-time experience in the aviation insurance industry 

• Proof of coursework completion for the following courses: 
  •  CPCU 500: Becoming a Leader in Risk Management and Insurance* 
  •  CPCU 520: Meeting Challenges Across Insurance Operations* 
  •  CPCU 530: Applying Legal Concepts to Insurance* 
  •  CPCU 552: Managing Commercial Liability Risk* 
  •  AIA's Aviation Insurance Core Principles & Concepts Course 
• Current membership with the Aviation Insurance Association 

• Completed CAIP application (including payment of application fee) 

*Please note, CPCU courses are administered by The Institutes. In 2023, the Institutes revised their CPCU course session titles. The AIA will accept the CPCU 500, 520, 530, and 552 courses under their current and former session titles. The AIA offers course waivers for applicants with certain designations and educational experiences. View the list of eligible designations/degrees below. Please note, there is no waiver available for AIA’s Core Principles & Concepts course. 

Individuals are asked to submit the CAIP application along with the relevant documentation through our application portal. Please log in with your AIA member credentials to start the application. If you are not an AIA member, you can register as a contact to start the application process. You can save an incomplete application and complete it later.  

Please note, CAIP designations are awarded once a year and in conjunction with the AIA annual conference, which is typically late April/early May.  To be eligible to receive your designation within that time frame, all applications must be submitted to AIA Headquarters for processing NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 28 of that year.

Candidates become eligible for CAIP Gold status no sooner than two years after their initial CAIP designation and all activities considered for CAIP Gold status shall have been accomplished after their initial CAIP designation. Once you achieve the CAIP Gold designation, you will need to re-qualify every two years. 

CAIP Gold applicants must demonstrate their sustained commitment to the aviation insurance profession through industry leadership, regular participation in the Aviation Insurance Association and other industry organizations, and ongoing involvement with industry educational programs. 

Additionally, applicants are required to earn at least 50 points, completing education, leadership, and participation activities outlined by the AIA Education Committee. For your reference, the point qualifications are listed below and outlined in the CAIP Gold application.

In addition, you will need to submit the appropriate paperwork to prove your attendance, etc., for each item. For example, if you have published an article in a magazine, include that article with the rest of your paperwork. If you’ve passed a national insurance exam, please submit your certificate or other proof of your passing score. Please note, mandatory courses required to obtain your CAIP designation cannot be included in your CAIP Gold point total.
